Layer-fMRI and predictive processing¶
How does cortex implement predictive processing — separating bottom-up sensory drive from top-down cognitive modulation? We use submillimeter 7T laminar fMRI to test layer-specific computations in human pain processing.
Key study¶
Using a factorial manipulation of nociceptive input and cognitive (distraction) modulation, bottom-up processing was strongest in middle cortical layers, whereas top-down modulation preferentially engaged superficial layers — consistent with cortico-cortical feedback. Individual differences in this laminar segregation predicted distraction-induced analgesia, linking circuit architecture to behaviour.
